About STACK
STACK offers a suite of cloud-based construction software solutions include takeoff and estimating, project management and field productivity software. STACK is a single and centralized platform from which to manage construction bidding processes and manage the entire construction process.
Incorporating takeoff measurement and markup tools, smart estimation technology, reports, real-time collaboration, streamlined bidding and customization capabilities, STACK aims to provide users with an accurate and flexible takeoff and estimating solution. Designed to accommodate any trade, STACK operates easily for landscaping, roofing or concrete and masonry projects as well as for general construction projects.
With STACK, users can measure digital plans, collaborate with team members, finalize project estimates and customize materials and pricing quickly and accurately. Concrete and masonry contractors can estimate footings, walls, site casts and tilt-up or lift-slab projects, while interior finish contractors can measure plans and determine quantities for ceiling, drywall, flooring and painting. STACK’s powerful measurement, markup and cutout tools are also beneficial for landscapers planning minor sitework, irrigation or paving and general contractors seeking to verify quantity takeoff. With these careful measurements, users can then apply material, labor and equipment costs accordingly.
Every STACK user has access to a library of industry specific material databases, customizable takeoff and estimating reports and organizational tools such as the bid calendar dashboard, optical character recognition (OCR), auto naming and bookmarking. STACK provides users with a cloud-based, floating license which allows users to access and utilize STACK features at any time, from any location. To further enhance STACK’s flexibility, users receive automatic software updates and on-demand training.

Accurate painting takeoffs for commercial & residential construction projects.
Accurate painting takeoffs for commercial & residential construction projects.
Pros
The Items & Assemblies feature of STACK Pro allow us to create estimates that are accurate and detail focused.
Cons
Although STACK has already started deploying hot keys in their estimating software, we would really like to see a "DELETE" hot key. We also think having the ability to move drawing tabs around in the plan screen (similar to how one can move Google Chrome tabs in their browser) would help keep drawings in-order if they have been opened out of sequence.

Cloud Takeoff

Stack was a significant upgrade to our takeoff process. The speed and being able to natively use it on Mac make this software great. The development team continues to add great features, some of which bring feature parity with competitors, but others are unique and now classified as "can't live without" around our office.
Pros
The ability to log in and pull up all of our project drawings on any computer. The fact that this software is web based is great and makes this platform agnostic. As we are primarily a Mac based office, this is great and does not require virtualization to run windows based software. Stack is also incredibly fast to navigate and bring up projects. Even though our older software was on computer and not web based, it required long waits to open a project and switch between projects. With stack this is almost instantaneous and it allows multiple projects to be open at once in multiple tabs or windows.
Cons
It still lacks some functionality of our previous takeoff software, especially when we first started using it. Much of that functionality has been added since we started using it, and there are a few additional items they currently show as in the pipeline. Once those are released, all of the features we need will be here.

Does the job but needs improvement

Your take off software needs improvement. We've waited over a year for significant updates and they haven't occurred. We have subscribed again but we won't be unless updates are made shortly as our business is growing rapidly and we need software that will keep up and OST will keep up.
Pros
It's better than a lot of other take-off software. Is in colour and is easily printable. The support is always there.
Cons
There are many things OST does that Stack does not.
1. Being able to select the dimensions of the 'count' function. ie; 2000x500mm rectangle.
2. Being able to re-assign a measurement to another measurement. ie; I measured an area for 10 minutes as turf but it was actually garden. Select the area, right click, re-assign to garden. This means you don't have to delete the item and waste more time.
3. Being able to overlay plans. ie; Your client issues a new set of plans and you need to check the difference between the old and the new.
4. Being able to calculate multiple measurements in one. ie; I want a m2 area with my measurement so I can calculate mulch however, this is in a planterbox and I also need to calculate the soil depth as well as drainage cell to walls so I really need m2, m3 and perimeter functions all engaged.
5. We're not interested in Stack Estimating as it is all Microsoft excel based, like most other programs, making it only based on rates, rather than being able to adjust accordingly for site constraints using different machinery and access requirements.
6. Your legend key needs updating. It doesn't fit correctly on the page nicely.

Simple and Flexible

Pros
The ability to create involved assemblies of products and simply click to add all the right products for each situation is a serious time saver.
Cons
The product and pricing lists need to be easier to manage and update. We have pricing updates or new products about every quarter. To update that info is a hassle to do it one at a time or having to work through support to get an export then format all the new data then send it back to import it.

Stack is the customer service I measure all other customer service by. They are friendly, nice and helpful! They are super easy to reach as well from right inside Stack! They don't always have the answers, but if they can find them they will! Their knowledge database in stack is also pretty extensive so it's easy to find most of your easier answers in there yourself.
Pros
Stack is, hands down, one of the simplest solutions I've found for doing takeoffs. Depending on the industry, it's possible it may be too simple, however for the purposes of drywall and paint it is perfect. Building assemblies in Stack really streamlines the whole takeoff process, saving a lot of time and headache when it comes down to the little details. It's also super easy to learn due to how uncomplicated Stack's tool and interface are. You can make things much more complicated for more detailed accuracy, but you don't have to.
Cons
I'd like a few more options when it comes to proposal generation, but this is still a fairly new feature within Stack. Being able to fine tune the formatting would be helpful.
