The industry standard
Reviewed on 12/10/2020
Honestly, I love Excel. The truth is, once you unlock the various features there is very little you can't do. For fun I've created a dynamic resume', a slide presentation and even a couple of games inside Excel just to see if I could.
Pros
Excel's greatest value is its ability to be many things for many people. I would say 90% of the people I've seen use Excel only use about 10% of its capabilities, and it's great for that. People are making quick budgets, schedules, to-do lists and even recipes books with excel and don't need many "pro" features for that.
Then there are the people who use it for contact management and data-processing, I've even seen an Excel instance that used extensive scripting to handle CRM, inventory and mail-merge marketing. I don't suggest it, but if you really want to get into it, it's very possible.
I'd say the greatest advantage of using Excel is that it's the industry standard for spreadsheets. If send someone an excel sheet you can bet that they will have a way to open it.
Cons
For cons, it does annoy me a bit that the Mac version isn't nearly as good as the Windows version. It's not surprising, of course, but it is annoying. I use Excel on different platforms and operating systems and the difference is striking.
Also, if you do plan on getting in the weeds with excel for business intelligence and data processing, you can literally spend years studying ti and getting proficient with the all of the capabilities.
And finally, it can be a huge processor hog and slow down everything else on your computer if you aren't careful. Even a simple spreadsheet with a simple formula involving whole columns can suddenly bring a stop to your workday.
Reasons for Switching to Microsoft Excel
Most often the choice was based on the rest of the enterprise using Excel but I also believe it's a better product than either Sheets or Numbers. The one place I use Google Sheets over excel is if I'm sharing information with a lot of people, or using templates integrated with other Google products, like analytics.- Industry: Photography

J.L. Microsoft Excel Review
Reviewed on 2/6/2023
Microsoft Excel is my number one choice when it comes to the process of data entry, storage and visualization in an all-in-one software. Though it was a little difficult to begin using the software, I quickly got the hang of it with help of their quick pop-up guides that provide background on every feature. I would definitely recommend it to anyone that's looking to conduct business or small assignments and everything in between.
Pros
Every cell in my workbook can be filled with a colour of my choice. This helps me highlight important data from the rest or improve the plain white background design.
Cons
When using Microsoft Excel on my mobile device, even though dark mode can be activated to change the theme of the app, the workbook itself can't change to black with white text. This affects my eyesight when working at night and the only way to fix this is my highlighting every cell and manually changing the colour of it from white to black. After this is done, the text in every cell has to be changed to white in order to contrast the black background.

I use Excel spreadsheets for all practice operations. I keep track of how many patients we seen this year compared to last year and AR for the practice. I also have 3 other providers in our office and I use Excel to keep track of their overall performance.
Pros
I like the organization. Nothing beats excel in this. The features are definitely a plus and once you know how to use Excel it is awesome.
Cons
Very hard to use. I feel like someone that has no idea on how to use Excel won't use it at all because it looks intimidating. The simplest functions are hard to figure out. I took an Excel class is College and it was one of the hardest classes I have taken.

There's a learning curve but...
Reviewed on 2/15/2023
Pros
The toolbars are organized well and it makes putting "sheets" together a bit easier. If math is required or some type of organization, you need to simply put in formulas. There are templates for many things projects you may have and the formulas are already there. If you start from scratch, you get those formulas are in, then it's a cakewalk from there. I haven't had a single issue where the program stops responding or a file can't be opened which is a huge plus.
Cons
There's a learning curve for sure as you do need to know your way around if you don't have some type of base knowledge. Again, you can use templates but that can't always save you and you'll spend an eternity trying to get what you need done. The cool thing is you can find free files online using good ol' google for a project you want to complete where the formulas are done for you.

Excel Review
Reviewed on 2/19/2020
We have created significant analytical databases of contacts, survey results and demand/supply data for clients with Excel. The manipulation of that data is straightforward. The tools within Excel are a standard we use daily in our work.
Pros
There is nothing to dislike about Excel - it is the standard for data creation and manipulation. The best features are its easy functionalities via simply clicking on icons in the header (ribbon display) and efficiently creating equations in the cells/rows. Copy/paste, insert columns and automatic population of rows with either mathematical formulas or counts is so helpful and efficient.
Cons
Sometimes the Search function doesn't return the best results. I'd also like to see a function where right-clicking on the workbook name (located at the top of the display header while the workbook is open) enables copying the filename with its file path so as to send a link to someone wither in an email or other method.

Still the best and most comprehensive spreadsheet software around.
Reviewed on 10/25/2020
I could not undertake my daily work without Excel. I'd highly recommend that user are sent on courses to get the basics rights and then move onwards and move to advanced formulae courses and then perhaps Excel and VBA.
Unless there is a very specific data/numerical task that may have custom software, Excel covers all bases very well indeed.
Pros
When people say Excel they use it as interchangeably as the word spreadsheet and it's now excepted that just saying Excel is to suffice on it's own. There is very little that cannot be accomplished with numbers using Excel. I have used Excel to complete financial statements, carry out financial modelling and valuation.
The UI is intuitive, familiar, and with the continual progression and development of Excel within the office family, it's compatibility and integration is easily done. Years ago I only ever recorded Macros to automate and do mundane or repetitive tasks but using VBA is so much better once you get to grips with it and the VBA editor is user friendly.
Functions and formulae are the real massive strengths. The current ones now, 2020, are some of the most comprehensive and impressive. If you are comfortable with logical math sequences then nested IFs are simple and a must!
Cons
I do love Excel but unless you're on a super monster processor with massive RAM, having references drawing on other sheets or very large data sets, can be very slow to initially process. Where possible it is more efficient to keep the data within the sheet but on other Tabs; but this is not always possible. It is not designed foremost to be a database with the large dataset handling but it does try given time to process.

Excel is a tool that optimizes many processes in an organization

In my experience I started using Excel to create my school hours and after university, then in college I gave application for results of reports and database creation with records that I should take, in my current job I must work with Excel to generate the calculation sheets with the full staff that will attend each day, plus the notes when they are evaluated are downloaded in excel sheet from the application that is used for the purpose of the evaluations, in addition to possible presentation of reports and dynamic dashboards that it must generate for the management with respect to my part of the work.
The reality my experience has been satisfactory and I am always comfortable working with excel.
Pros
Excel is a tool that I have always liked because in addition to presenting a pretty nice design in its latest versions, its features allow you to take thousands of benefits, from list of products with prices, to generating lists of nominees to know how much you should charge each month, these applications can even be optimized through its powerful tool such as MACROS, which allows us to apply programming to optimize processes that must be performed very frequently. We can not let go that allows us to generate accounts reports to our liking, allowing the possibility of using the graphics that best fit for our presentation, this just to mention one of its valuable applications. The reality Excel has become a valuable tool for many processes within a company, since their applications are endless. Its simplicity to handle it makes that anyone with a little practice can handle it quickly
Cons
The tool has evolved a lot, providing many advantages today that make it have few negative details, so I think that although it can still improve, I do not see very negative things that should be highlighted.

Still the champion of spreadsheet software!
Reviewed on 3/22/2019
My main purpose when using Excel these days is for conveying complex ideas to different stakeholders, whether they are other team members and colleagues, or clients. We prepare our project proposals in Excel, we calculate our advertising and operating budgets in Excel, and we sometimes even use it to build out calculators that help to take complex math around ad spend budgeting and make it into a user-friendly experience (with a little bit of formatting help to make it look nice, of course).
Pros
I often need to do financial projections as part of my work, as well as organizing lists, information about different events that are being organized, structuring new projects that are being undertaken, and various other calculations that just need to happen in the course of my business, on a day-to-day basis. In other words, its fair to say that I basically "live" in Excel. The thing I love most about this tool is just how much you can do with it, when you take the time to really understand how to use it. Excel is simple enough to use as a place to keep a list of people who are coming to an event organized, and complex enough basically act like a mini database. The flexibility to use a single tool in so many different ways is one of my favorite things about this software.
Cons
Even though I've used this software for many many years, probably a decade or more, and most people regard me as an expert in it, there's still functions and applications of it that I haven't yet mastered. There's so much going on under the hood that it's next to impossible to know absolutely every single function that this piece of software can accomplish for you. Which means that if I'm trying to do something a little bit more complex than my usual activities, and I need to stretch my own limits on what I know how to do with the software, I can often lose an hour or two hunting for how-to guides and videos on the internet to make sure that I get the result I really want. However, once I get it, I've just added another tool to my toolbox that continues to make the software even more powerful. So, all in all, even that is time well spent, in my opinion.

Excel - an irreplaceable tool to store data
Reviewed on 12/11/2019
I use Excel for a large array of projects. Here are the most common utilisations. Excel is a simple but highly effective tool to keep track of my freelance income. Add the months of the year on the first row and insert the money generated during each month. From now on you can calculate the average monthly revenue, expenses, create graphics to visualize the income, profit, and so on.
At the same time, I use Excel at work to create basic databases. Excel is golden to create lists of sites, group them depending on various criteria, keep track of leads, customers, and write a few math formula when needed.
Briefly, Excel simplifies my life considerably and I hardly believe that any tool can replace it.
Pros
I can’t recommend Excel highly enough. The biggest advantage is its complexity - it helps you from doing simple math operations to create complex graphs or write basic programming concepts (IF/THEN). It's probably the best spreadsheet software and as a result is an irreplaceable tool for many businesses. Paradoxically, even though it’s a complex tool, Excel is relatively simple to use. People who previously used Microsoft Word and PowerPoint won’t face big problems when using Excel.
I like the most to create pie charts or any visual - these says more than a plethora of rows and columns. Excel is the best at this chapter.
Cons
Using the basic functions of Excel is simple. However, getting the most from this amazing tool is pretty challenging. Excel is jam-packed with useful features and some users might face troubles. There are tons of YouTube tutorials or Udemy courses teaching you how to use Excel like a pro. Check any of these courses if you want to become an advanced Excel user.

Pros
There are so many things I live about Microsoft Excel. It is very intuitive in many cases and even makes "suggestions" on some of my tasks. I use Excel is multiple situations, and not just for number crunching as some people might think. Excel is my favorite software for charts and numerical reports, but I also love it for creating logs, lists, forms, graphs, and the list goes on. Microsoft Excel is very good with imported data, like files from software that uses Crystal Reports or similar applications. Excel is also good for creating and manipulating .csv files to export into other applications. I'm not an expert user, but the formulas in Excel are works of art. I can create a decent formula to yield specific information, however I often don't have to do so. Excel has a library of formulas from the simple to the impossible, and everything in between. I like that for simple formulas, I don't have to recreate the wheel - there is already a template for that. When I have trouble working out a formula in my head, there is likely a formula already existing in Excel that will produce the desire result. And when I have something super complicated, or it needs to reference multiple pieces of data on multiple tabs, Excel easily follows the formula to get the exact data needed.
Cons
My least favorite feature of Microsoft Excel is also my most favorite. For all its flexibility and multiple uses, Excel is a very rigid software. By that, I mean that any data introduced into the software that does not fit into very strict parameters (which are admittedly quite expansive), Excel is unable to accommodate or render the expected information. That is true of many programs to some extent, however, Excel's limitations are a bit more noticeable than other software. That said, there are almost always work-arounds to achieve the desired result.

Reviewed on 10/28/2019
Overall, the cons that it provide do not outmatch the great benefits Excel can give. I don't see any other software going beyond what Excel can do, especially since it has established itself for decades now. I disagree with the fact that most Microsoft software are subscription based now, but I guess it just goes with the trend and the times. I'll be using Excel daily from today until the foreseeable future.
Pros
Excel has become a daily part of my life to help manage all the things that need to be accomplished both for short term and long term. As an online freelancer, I need a lot of excel sheets to track my work schedule, tasks, accounting, investments, upcoming events, just to name a few. The design is easy and intuitive. It hasn't changed a lot since its earlier versions, but I guess it comes down to the old adage: "Don't Fix What Isn't Broken". Most of its features are those available with other Microsoft applications such as Word and POwerpoint, making the ease into the software much easier.
Cons
Excel is an easy tool to learn but it is hard to master. While it can be used as a simple log, learning more about it can actually yield to more time saved as Excel can be programmed to do computations for you. That said, there are so many ways to use Excel that it can at times overload me with information, to the point that event the simplest of tasks become a little more complicated due to symbols and shortcuts, not being as clear as they should be. Excel also suffers from a similar problem that other Microsoft applications have in that they Auto Format to the point that it becomes irritating. You could waste some of your time trying to correct figures in your Excel sheet if it suddenly starts to believe that your info is a date and acts on its own will.

Business solution with no better alternative
Reviewed on 7/28/2019
I used Excel as a student, where I carried out basic tasks. I kept using Excel as IT Business Analyst where I extended the amount and type of functions I used. I carried out project management and basic data analyses in Excel. Finally, for the past year or so, I work as data scientist and I sometimes use Excel to carry out data cleaning and inspection on Excel because it's the good old pal I know. Excel is my best tool at work and I totally, even emotionaly love Excel.
Pros
The ease of use, amount of functions, possibility of things can be done, writing functions within functions, giving link to cells between sheets and other Excel files.
It's almost possible to create a database-like structure using VOOKUPs, HLOOKUPs, which result in "Join"s.
Functions have not only basic operations such as sums, dot products, but also return statistical parameters too. For instance, one time I needed the slope of an array (I actually work as a data scientist and use Excel, too) and there was a function for this. All I need to do was to point out the array and Excel fits a linear regression in background, giving me the slope of it as I needed.
Not only that but availability of VBA extends the functions of Excel even furthermore. For that reason I cannot imagine anything Excel cannot do that one would be able to do on paper and pen.
Cons
As I explained above, I work as a data scientist and I sometimes deal with huge amount of data "BIG DATA". As much as I love working on Excel, unfortunately Excel sometimes cannot handle big data, especiaily if there are millions of rows. That's the only downside of Excel I can think of.

Review for Excel
Reviewed on 5/10/2019
Pros
I have been studying science for almost 6 years (my bachelor + my master) and I always need the help of Microsoft Excel when it comes to working with data. The software might not be the easiest when you use it for the first time, but once you understand and learn more of it, you will see how useful it actually is. I do a lot of research projects at my university and I always have to collect data for different purposes and subjects. After the collection of data, I always enter them on an Excel sheet orderly. It is very easy to insert my data into an Excel sheet for further calculation. What I personally think is when your data is too big, Microsoft Excel is the best software to deal with the problem. What I love most about this software is it incredibly saves my time. Because, I do a lot of calculation after having my data sorted on an Excel sheet. Excel does very complicated calculations in a considerably short time period that would probably take me days if I did it manually with my calculator. Last but not least, it enables me to create graphs and diagrams based on what my data shows. It is very helpful to analyze my data and present it clearly.
Cons
What I like least about this software is it is not smart enough to detect the errors that I might have done while entering my data on an Excel sheet. Especially it sucks when the software does automatic calculations with my data and since there might be some errors, I might end up with an incorrect result (e.g., graphs, diagrams) that is unacceptable in the case of science. I would also argue that automatic graph suggestion by the software (assumed based on my data) is not always correct. Sometimes I am suggested a diagram, for example, that does not make sense at all. I personally think Excel's ability to create graphics and diagrams is less accurate than the other software like R programming language.

Software's Swiss Army Knife
Reviewed on 12/8/2018
Excel is so powerful and is the gateway for many people into harnessing the power of large data. It is indispensable for most office workers and individuals who need to input, track, manage and manipulate data in an increasingly complex world.
Pros
I have been using Excel since the 90's and like how flexible the tool is. I've used it to create planners, budgets, to do lists, loan calculators, calendars, financial reports, reconciliation tools, resumes, contact lists, trip itineraries, financial models, statistical analyses, stock charts and surveys.
I really love how much formatting is possible, the depth of financial functions and the number of online resources to support use of this wonderful tool. Over time, the interface and functionality has got smarter and recent versions of the software seem to anticipate your needs and offer the correct options and functions based on the context of your current actions.
Cons
There is a tendency to use Excel for everything and in some cases a database or dedicated project management tool would be more suitable to the task at hand. I've seen investment companies using Excel to monitor and report on millions of dollars of assets and personally used Excel to manage complex projects where other tools would have been much less manual.
My criticisms may be due to lack of knowledge, but, I really struggled with collaboration and version control when working with an outside organization. We used the same Excel workbook and forwarded this document back and forth with updates. Manually keeping track of the versions and changes became a nightmare. I've also seen situations where you have functions referencing cells in other documents or tabs and the links can be fragile, easily broken - sometimes causing rework and potential errors.

At my workplace we needed a database but did not have the funds to purchase one but with Excel, we were able to meet our needs. Through using the conditional formatting, IF/THEN functionality and sorting we were able to build something that met our needs and saved us money!
Pros
Microsoft Excel has great functionality and can do a great diversity of tasks from simple math to complex data tracking tools. My two favorite functions of Excel include IF/THEN functionality and the ability to sort. The IF/THEN function is especially useful because if it's broad applications. For example if I had a two columns across the top with the categories "Name" and "Paid?" then I can make it so that my spread sheet would turn a persons name red if the response in the paid box next to their name said no. I also love being able to use this function in the application of using a date. For example, if a date is past, then it can flag the date. This is useful when trying to meet deadlines and staying on a timeline. This tool can also be used to clean up your spreadsheet. For example if you want to clear all data from a certain date on, you can do that with the IF/THEN tool. My other favorite thing about this software is the ability to sort. This is especially useful when you have large amounts of data because it allows you to tailor what you want to see and it will only show the data you've selected while still having all the other data hidden. Turn the filters off and all your data is still there. When using these two favorites of mine in tandem you get even more use out of this software.
Cons
I feel like this software has a steep learning curve. I took an intermediate excel class and an advanced excel class in my workplace and those were extremely helpful to understand how this software works. I feel like anyone can jump into it and figure out very basic functionality of this software but to reach the full potential of excel some training is needed. Luckily there are a lot of great videos on YouTube where you can learn a lot on how to use excel!

Excel Functionality Review
Reviewed on 10/28/2019
Excel has been and will continue to be a vital asset to this business. It is utilized daily and provides limitless value to the operations of the company. Excel remains as a reliable tool and ultimately meets our needs.
Pros
Excel is accepted as industry standard for many. It is familiar, accessible and a diverse and powerful tool in and out of the workplace. Excel continues to be a valuable asset to our company, it is utilized to support production logs, inventory management, financial documents as well as many other applications.
Cons
Excel is a very powerful tool, there is no disputing that. The primary issue with excel is that it does not propose its most valuable features onto the user. It is obviously ideal to have the tools that are utilized most on the primary tool bars however it often masks the more favorable tools. For instance, excel has a developer tab of which you can use and produce your own macros, expansion packs, etc. This tab has limitless value, but unless the user happens to know about these features or has someone else recommend it to them they ultimately have lost this functionality. Excel also lacks in support documentation for the user. Although documentation exists in an effort to explain tools and functionalities to users, it is simply lacking in useful information. I believe it would be more beneficial if excel would include short videos on how to actually use the tools/extensions with examples.

Powerful tool for data visualization, analysis, calculation and presentations
Reviewed on 12/23/2019
We use Microsoft Excel to maintain large data set, perform calculations and data visualization across each department. We also use the excel spreadsheet as a client deliverable format as it is present, graphs and charts are easy to digest and allow easy modification at both ends.
Pros
Microsoft Excel spreadsheet is the most widely used tool across organizations to maintain a large data set in a tabular format, to perform calculations, for visualization and analysis. Excel supports basic mathematical functions including filter, sort, color code, add, subtract, multiply, divide to much-advanced formulas such as pivot table, if-else etc. for data manipulation. Excel has built-in support for macros which can automate your manual task and can save a lot of time. Even if you are naïve user of excel and want to apply some functions, user community support is quite extensive. All you have to do is just type ‘how to do XYZ in excel’ and you would get ready answers. Excel is also very useful tools for basic graphs and charting and if you want to take analytics to a pro-level then it supports integration with advanced analytics tools such as Power BI. Autosave feature and excel subscription as a part of Office 365 allow you to save your excel files on the cloud which can be accessed anywhere using internet connectivity.
Cons
Features on Excel mobile App are somewhat limited. Large size excel file makes your system slow, time-consuming and sometimes it even crashes. If you want pro-level expertise in Excel, you need to undergo training. The good part is that excel online tutorials are widely available across multiple platforms such as YouTube, Courseera, etc.
