Construction costing without the headaches

Buildparter is a fantastic offering and one that brings real value to project teams of all sizes. From one person design teams, to larger projects with many contractors and teams bidding for work.

Pros

Buildpartner makes construction cost estimating possible for those with no prior experience. The industry guards their construction costs and labour prices a close kept secret, and it's incredibly hard to begin putting a costing plan together with confidence without it. Buildparter allows users to intuitively, build a cost plan room by room, floor by floor, and gives accurate pricing for both material and labour costs for all. Their standardised templates give every user a huge first step, with a set of tools to easily edit and adjust as needed from there on. It is so much easier to edit a first draft, than build one from scratch. And this is what Buildpartners offers flawlessly.

Cons

There are limited templates for Moderns Method of Construction (MMC) approaches such as Timber frame or SIP. It is mostly weighted towards renovation and extension projects rather than complete new builds. material costs can take a while to update, and has no live direct links to merchant or supplier store pricing. Menas every price needs to be checked and adjusted as needed.

It is a really easy to use interface and works well on all modern browsers.

Cons

It takes a lot of time to tweak it to work in a similar way to what I require. It also doesn't allow me to show costs in the way that I would like.

Response from Buildpartner

Hi Ian. Thanks for your feedback. The reports and costs are entirely customisable so this is possible. We did offer free additional set-up for you so you could have the information generated exactly how you wanted but you said you were too busy and unsubscribed. If you'd like to give it another go you're welcome to get in touch any time and we'll give you a free set up call and month subscription to get you going. All the best! H

Its a handy tool to produce quick estimates that can be downloaded as a branded PDF and given straight to the customer. It is capable of doing much more but would benefit from some tutorials showing how to use it effectively, and maybe a guide on what build elements are called so they can be found easier in the database.

Pros

I use it for estimates because I can produce a rough estimate very quickly. The tool is capable of much more than estimating but I for me personally I find the tool difficult to use and get the most out of it.

Cons

For me I find it difficult to produce an accurate quote. It is very good at producing an estimate and will include what I deem to be an example of how the project can be built.

However, all projects are different and when I try to alter the build elements to fit what I'm actually going to be doing I can't find suitable items in the database.

So far the overall experience has excelled any expectation. The platform is easy to navigate and the team are always on hand and super help when needed.

Pros

It's simplicity to use and the ability as an Architect, to be able to provide clients with outline costs for the various design options from early concept design all the way through to completion. In addition, the cost database provides an invaluable tool to test and evaluate costs across a range of residential project sizes and scopes, aiding in that role of Contract Administrator

Cons

As with any information database, it is constantly being expanded and built upon. As such, we have come across items of work, often very bespoke and often very few, that are not accounted for. Saying that, in these instances the Buildpartner team has tried to find a reasonable cost or advised on a reasonable provisional sum to include

Very positive, its not just the product that they're offering thats excellent, its the level of service and care that comes with it. And because the price of the service is affordable, it helps me work out if projects are financially sustainable before I take them on.

Pros

I found the program ease of use appealing. After setting up one project which took about an hour, the other projects took minutes to price.
The speed of which you can get quotes for jobs is a game changer.
As a small practice working on small budget projects, the price of BP means its the only financially viable way to cost jobs.

Cons

Initially, on the higher-end jobs, for instance Listed Buildings in central london, the rates seemed a bit low.
I queried it with the BP team, and they reviewed and adjusted some of the spec and in turn the estimates were pretty bang on.
The level of service, and speed of answering questions is excellent.

Excellent in terms of producing cost plans and schedules of work.

Pros

I like how BuildPartner provides quick cost plans from a small amount of effort. Key in the areas within your building, fine tune the proposed works and you can get cost plan information at three different levels of budget. I like how the costing information is updated using data from builders local to the area as well.

Cons

I haven't quite got to grips with how to get builders to price through the platform.

An accessible and valuable resource

Reviewed on 2023-11-13

Pros

Buildpartner is a valuable resource within the practice. It is accessible, user-friendly and gives the practice confidence when providing domestic clients with indicative costings in the early design stages.

Cons

Buildpartner will sometimes make generic assumptions, particularly with regards to retrofit/refurbishment works, that you need to keep an eye on. If Buildpartner's assumptions are incorrect it can have dramatic implications on projected build costs.

The easiest way to create outline build costs reports (fast!)

Reviewed on 2023-11-07

Pros

The platform is very easy to use, and it allows me to quickly put together an outline cost plan for a property renovation or extension at a much earlier design stage than I did before. Basically from a floor plan sketch design. This means I can give my clients a realistic idea of build costs at a very early stage before we've invested lots of time and money in fully developing a design. It gives us a 'sense check' we are on the right track before developing the design further. I also like the support I get from the team. If I ever have a question about using the platform, they are very proactive at getting back to me.

Cons

Nothing immediately springs to mind. I really like the platform.

Generally really enjoyed using the platform and once had got our heads around it, it was really interesting to use. Would be keen to experiment with it on more projects especially as the platform develops.

Pros

The platform is easy to use and has some good filtering features which facilitates entering of the data and analysing costs once completed. The resulting figures and date for the project are presented well and clearly.

Cons

The output as an excel file was extremely difficult for both us and contractors to use and price and was not at all as user friendly as the platform. Annoyingly the spreadsheet also omitted some key data (which was present in the platform) such as categorising client directs by room. The platform itself could be easier to use if operated more like an excel sheet when entering data rather than having to click through into items individually. Potentially more (drop down) categories and key fields like thickness dims etc would help streamline it more so that there are less 'unknowns' as some items rely on data being inputted from other users or the platform itself.

Response from Buildpartner

Hi Alice, thanks for your review!
We are currently working hard to update the schedule / excel export functionality. So you should find these updates in the coming months!
Also, if you didn't already know the Tasks sheet on the excel export functionality works based off whatever view is currently showing. Our updates to the excel extract and schedule page, will clear this up though.

We use the software regularly up to the tendering stage. In time we hope to fully integrate it in our tendering and contract management stages.

Pros

We use the software regularly to prepare fee proposals. It is incredibly easy to use and fast. You will have a preliminary cost estimate(stage 1) in one hour and a detailed one (stage 3) in a couple of hours.
The people behind it listen to our requests: they have recently added a duplicate button so that we can prepare cost estimates for several options at once.

Cons

When switching to the tendering and contract stages, the pricing information can be too detailed to track variations.

Overall I am happy with the pricing software. It is very easy to create job costs with a project timeline.

Pros

The software has built in prices. When I need advice or I need to create new tasks with costs, I use the chat feature or send an email, the quantity surveyors on the other side generate a work sheet or template for me to use. I can log into the software from any device wherever I am.

Cons

I used a new trial service for Buildpartner to input the data to generate costs for a whole project. It didn’t really work for me. Although I can log into the software from any device, this pro can become a con when the internet service goes down.

Very impressed with the BuildPartner team and the level of support. It is useful software but probably better suited to some users over others.

Pros

Customer service is excellent. The software itself is relatively easy to use and one of the best features is how it compares your quote to the costs of similar projects in the area.

Cons

I find I need to tweak many areas of the quote to more accurately reflect the project costs, particularly those involving labour.

Also, I think the software is better suited to users working on smaller projects - sub £100k - where you would be estimating on multiple projects throughout the year. I might only use it once or twice a year as our average project size is much higher.
